Chris Hughton is confident of landing Sheffield United defender Matt Kilgallon in January. The Newcastle boss first expressed an interest in the centre-half in the summer but his efforts eventually came to no avail.
There were rumours that the Magpies would look to bring the 25-year-old in on loan before the deadline on Thursday evening but those plans also appear to have been scuppered.
However, having rejected a new contract at Bramall Lane last month, the former Leeds ace looks certain to leave in January with the Blades holding out for Ј1million despite Kilgallon being available for free at the end of the season.
"Matt Kilgallon's one of a few players that we've had an interest in, but I don't anticipate anything being done today," Hughton told the Chronicle.
"The bigger time for us is in the window and we've got to make sure we do the right business then."
Meanwhile Newcastle youngster Kazenga LuaLua has been linked with a loan move to Doncaster but Hughton insists he does not envisage any players coming or going before the loan window shuts.
"At the moment I don't anticipate anyone coming in. I don't think anyone will be going out, either," he added.
