Hertha Berlin guaranteed a place in the last 32 of the Europa League with a victory over Group D winners Sporting, as Heerenveen's hammering of already-eliminated FK Ventspils proved irrelevant.
Hertha knew that a win over Sporting would guarantee runners-up spot and they produced the goods with a 1-0 success at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
Gojko Kacar scored the only goal of the game in the 71st minute to ensure the three points and take Hertha into the knockout stages.
Heerenveen's comprehensive 5-0 demolition of Latvian outfit Ventspils, who were already condemned to bottom spot, was therefore rendered meaningless.
Jan de Jonge's side could have qualified if Hertha had lost and they collected a victory.
But second-half goals from Mika Vayrynen, Viktor Elm, a brace from substitute Gerald Sibon, and Darryl Janmaat were not enough to avoid elimination.
