Europa League - Group J round-up

Club Brugge beat Toulouse 1-0 in Europa League Group J to ensure they qualify for the knockout stages.

Toulouse needed to win in Belgium to overtake Brugge but they could not break through and find that crucial goal at Jan Breydel Stadium, although the home side only found the back of the net in the closing seconds.

Brugge were a point ahead of the French side and knew a draw would be enough to secure their progress. However, they went for the win, enjoying the better chances throughout and ultimately being rewarded in stoppage time as Ivan Perisic hit a richly-deserved winner.

Jonathan Blondel carved out the game's first chance in the third minute, trying his luck from 18 yards but seeing his effort saved with relative ease by Mathieu Valverde.

The home side maintained their early pressure as Antonin Alcaraz headed over the bar moments later.

A flurry of activity in the 16th minute resulted in Toulouse's Ricardo Machado smashing an effort from 20 yards with his left foot which forced Stijn Stijnen into an acrobatic save after his defence failed to properly clear a free-kick.

Michael Klukowski briefly brought some excitement to proceedings after a long lull with a 54th-minute shot from the left but his somewhat speculative attempt went over the bar.

At the same end Brugge had an effort in the 56th minute when Rostand Kouemaha fired towards goal but like his team-mate's effort, the shot was rather hopeful and Valverde made the save.

The pressure continued to mount on Toulouse and they had a narrow escape when Ronald Vargas' left-footed effort from six yards somehow failed to trouble the defence.

With less than 20 minutes left on the clock Vargas again tried his luck, this time seeing his right-footed effort from the edge of the area going wide.

After his woeful shot earlier in the half, Vargas turned instead to assistance to set up the injury-time winner, crossing from the right for Perisic to tap home.

In the other game in Group J, whipping boys Partizan Belgrade picked up their first points of the campaign with a surprise 1-0 win over leaders Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Ukrainians were already assured of top spot before kick-off but will be disappointed to lose their final match in the group.

The hosts began in determined fashion and Adam Ljajic, whose move to Manchester United recently fell through, saw his 25-yard free-kick tipped round the post by Shakhtar goalkeeper Andrei Pyatov in the fourth minute.

And less than three minutes later Partizan were ahead, Lamine Diarra netting from close range.

The visitors appeared shell-shocked and they were saved by the woodwork moments later when Marko Lomic's corner was headed against the bar by Mladen Krstajic.

Shakhtar finally pulled themselves together and created a decent chance midway through the half but Luiz Adriano could not direct his shot on target.

Srdjan Knezevic began the second half by testing Pyatov but he could not get enough power behind his shot to really trouble the goalkeeper.

The home side were hanging on slightly but Branislav Jovanovic did test Pyatov with a rare foray into the Shakhtar half.

Lucescu brought on Vitaliy Vitsenets and Oleksiy Gai as the visitors pushed for an equaliser but Partizan should have sown up victory in the 79th minute only for Krstajic to head wide from another Lomic corner.

Luis Fernandinho resumed his long-range battle with Bozovic in the final 10 minutes but this time the Brazilian could only send two efforts over the bar and Partizan were able to celebrate a morale-boosting victory.
