Andy Murray apologises to public after defeat

Andy Murray made a tearful apology to fans after losing out in his bid to end a 74-year Grand Slam drought against Roger Federer in the Australian Open final.

World number one Federer celebrated his 16th major victory after seeing off Murray 6-3 6-4 7-6 (13-11), leaving Britain still in search of its first Grand Slam title since Fred Perry won the US Open in 1936.

"Sorry I couldn't do it for you tonight," said an emotional Murray at the official match presentation.

"I can cry like Roger, it's just a shame I can't play like him."

"I'd like to congratulate Roger," he added.

"His achievements in tennis are incredible and to keep doing it year after year is pretty special. He was a lot better than me tonight.

"I'd like to thank all you guys, the support I got the whole tournament was great, loved every minute of it and hopefully one year I can come back and win here."

Federer was full of praise for Murray's display throughout the Melbourne Park tournament and insists the Briton is destined for Grand Slam glory.

"Well done for your incredible tournament," said Federer.

"You played fantastic and you're too good of a player not to win a grand slam, so don't worry about it."

"Winning this again, I think I played some of the best tennis of my life these past two weeks," he added.

"This is a very special moment - a first grand slam as a father."

Speaking of Murray's emotional reaction, Federer added: "He does it way better than me. I didn't want to do it last year and I did."
