Liverpool enhanced their chances of finishing in the top four with a comfortable 2-0 win over Bolton at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt handed the home side a half-time lead as he stabbed in from close range after being teed up by Alberto Aquilani on 37 minutes.
Striker David Ngog was guilty of a horrendous miss shortly after the break, but his blushes were spared when Kevin Davies inadvertently directed into his own net with 70 minutes on the clock.
The result might have been different had Bolton midfielder Chung-Yong Lee converted in front of an open goal in the first half after rounding Pepe Reina.
The South Korean saw his goal-bound shot cleared off the line heroically by Reds defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos with the score goalless at that stage.
The win means Rafa Benitez's side, now unbeaten in six games, remain in fifth place, one point behind Tottenham who drew at Birmingham
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez:
"I am pleased with the result and the second half but not too happy with the first half - but at the end of the day we needed to win and we won.
"In the first half they had two chances and we were a little lucky but in the second half it was different and we could have scored more goals.
"I think we are improving. Clearly you can see the team is working hard."
Bolton boss Owen Coyle:
"Tamir Cohen on another day might have had a penalty and Chung-Yong Lee had a terrific run (when his shot was cleared off the line).
"The second goal was a foul as Lucas (Leiva) has dragged Johan Elmander and wherever the shot (by Emiliano Insua) was going it wasn't going in.
"Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez will be delighted he's had the breaks today."
