Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand has been banned for four matches for violent conduct following an appeal.
The Football Association has extended his ban by one additional game after a 'frivolous appeal' following an incident against Hull City last Saturday.
Ferdinand swung an arm which hit Tigers striker Craig Fagan on the head, and had initially been suspended for three fixtures.
The 31-year-old, who has made only 10 appearances for his club so far this season, will now sit out Sunday's Premier League encounter with Arsenal, followed by February's matches against Portsmouth, Aston Villa and Everton.
He will return for the Carling Cup final against Villa on 28th February, and will also be available for the UEFA Champions League tie against AC Milan on 16th February.
Ferdinand's ban poses problems for manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the centre of his defence with fellow centre-back John O'Shea likely to miss the rest of the season with a leg problem.
