Bari climbed four places to seventh with a 4-2 victory over Palermo, while Napoli played out a goalless draw with Genoa.
Palermo had gone into their match with Bari unbeaten in their previous seven matches but they were soon 2-0 down as Leonardo Bonucci and Edgar Alvarez struck inside the opening seven minutes.
Edison Cavani reduced Palermo's arrears in the 28th minute and Javier Pastore made it 2-2 early in the second half.
However, Palermo's good work was then undone when Fabio Liverani was sent off for a second bookable offence on 56 minutes.
Barreto fired Bari ahead from the penalty spot six minutes later and Vladimir Koman added a late fourth to seal the win.
The second game of the day failed to provide the same excitement as high-flying Napoli were held by Genoa.
The stalemate did at least extend fourth-placed Napoli's unbeaten run to 15 games, while Genoa remain in eighth.
