Sunderland's winless run was extended to 11 games as Kenwyne Jones struck to cancel out Mohamed Diame's stunning opener
Diame had put Wigan ahead by evading several challenges and charging into the box before hitting a thumping drive into the far corner.
But Jones, who had hit an upright in the first half, latched on to Jordan Henderson's cross to equalise.
Sunderland had earlier been unlucky to see a Darren Bent goal ruled out for offside during an impressive period.
Having looked off the pace until the early part of the second half, allowing Roberto Martinez's men to dominate, the Black Cats finally found their rhythm to give Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and his defenders plenty of problems late on.
But they had to be content with the point, despite the constant threat of Bent, Jones and eventually substitute Boudewijn Zenden. Nonetheless Sunderland boss Steve Bruce will be concerned to see his team's winless run in the league stretch to 11 games.
The draw did not really drag either team away from the relegation picture.
