Arsenal came from behind to beat Stoke City in a evening marred by an horrific injury to Welsh teenager Aaron Ramsey.
Ramsey was hurt following a crunching challenge with Ryan Shawcross, who was shown an immediate red card and left the pitch in tears at the realisation of how serious the problem was.
19-year-old Wales international received immediate help with his leg stabilised before he was stretchered off to warm but concerned applause and into a waiting ambulance which left the Britannia Stadium to take him to hospital.
Stoke had taken the lead when Danny Pugh headed in a long throw from usual suspect Rory Delap but Nicklas Bendtner levelled with a fine header back across goal.
Bendtner's throughball hit Pugh's arm for an Arsenal penalty late on, which Cesc Fabregas scored.
Thomas Vermaelen netted an injury time third to seal the win as Arsenal moved to only three points off Chelsea after the Blues went down to Manchester City earlier on the day.
But the game will be remembered for the horror injury to Ramsey, with television producers opting not to show replays of the incident.
The similar incident with the broken leg suffered by Gunners striker Eduardo against Birmingham almost two years ago.
Fabregas and Vermaelen appeared the most affected by the incident so it was to their immense credit that they recovered to score the goals which fired Arsenal right back into the title race.
