Everton striker Louis Saha scored twice as Chelsea's lead at the top of the Premier League was cut to one point after a shock defeat to Everton.
The visitors dominated the opening stages and Florent Malouda sent them into the lead when he raced onto Didier Drogba's flick-on before firing past Tim Howard.
Everton gradually came back into the match, however, and Saha's 100th goal in English football drew them level after the Frenchman headed in a corner from Landon Donovan.
Donovan was at the forefront of the action again just before half-time as he was brought down by Ricardo Carvalho inside the area only to see Saha's subsequent kick saved by Petr Cech.
But Everton continued to press after the break and Saha fired home the winner when he controlled beautifully with his chest before crashing the ball home.
The Toffees were without key midfielders Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar through injury and suspension respectively.
There was further good news for Moyes, with the influential Mikel Arteta starting a game for the first time this season.
The visiting team would have lost top spot if Manchester United had won at Aston Villa but Sir Alex Ferguson's team were held to a 1-1 draw.
Everton manager David Moyes
"It has been a long time coming.
"After the weekend defeat to Liverpool I thought that we showed great character. And we did it without two of our important players.
"I thought that we deserved our victory, which was against one of the top teams in the country."
Chelsea assistant boss Ray Wilkins
"If you look at the game as a whole you could say that Everton just about deserved to win it.
"It is disappointing but all good things must come to an end. We have got to be disappointed with the goals that we gave away.
"We have been on a good run but now we have to go on another one."
