Swiss ski jumper Simon Ammann wins the first gold of the 2010 Games, but the men's downhill is postponed because of poor conditions.
Switzerland's Simon Ammann won the first gold medal of the Vancouver 2010 Games, in normal hill ski jumping.
Ammann set a hill record 108m with the final jump of the event to take his third Olympic title, after winning two golds in Salt Lake City in 2002.
The world number one won ahead of Poland's Adam Malysz and Austrian pre-event favourite Gregor Schlierenzauer.
Ammann, who scored 276.5 points, led after the first round but then had to hold his nerve for the final jump.
Before the Games started there had been talk in jumping circles that Schlierenzauer's performances were slipping and his touch betrayed him on landing.
Schlierenzauer, however, is best known for his ability to glide through the air and should be strong contender in next week's large hill competition.
Luge training at the Winter Olympics resumed on Saturday, following the death of Nodar Kumaritashvili.
The men's event was moved to the lower women's start, which was expected to cut speeds by around 10kph.
International Luge Federation president Josef Fendt told a news conference: "We have been competed for almost 50 years and it was the worse event that has happened.
"We have not had a fatal accident in 35 years on artificial tracks.
"We are all sad and very shocked by the tragic accident and I would like to express my condolences to the family and the Georgian association."
The starts for the women's and doubles luge events will also be lowered, while a decision on skeleton and bobsleigh on the same track will be made by that sport's governing body.
The decision to continue was taken after probes by local coroners and the International Luge Federation
