Barcelona eased into the quarter-finals

The brilliant Argentine Lionel Messi scored twice as holders Barcelona overcome Stuttgart at Camp Nou to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 5-1 success on aggregate.

Lionel Messi gave the Catalans the lead early on when he was permited to cut inside and drill a wonderful twenty yard effort into the top corner.

Barcelona doubled the lead soon as Messi's pass split the Stuttgart defence and Yaya Toure dragged the ball back for Pedro to tap into the net.

A third goal was carried after the interval when the Argentine capped off a fantastic move by turning on the edge of the area and slotting the ball along Jens Lehmann.

Substitute Bojan scored a fourth in the final stages as he tucked away a simple chance after being sent clean through by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Barca manager Pep Guardiola:
"He was so determined.

"Every great has a ability to influence his team, like Michael Jordan with the Chicago Bulls. He's brilliant. We wouldn't trade him for anybody.

"To reach the last eight is very important. We were very, very powerful in all aspects, very aggressive. We played a great match."

Stuttgart manager Christian Gross:
"Barcelona are powerful individually and collectively and I think dropping of Real Madrid gave them some extra motivation.

"Messi's capacity is incredible when you cogitate his age. I think it's fair to compare him to Diego Maradona."
