Borja Valero was Mallorca's hero as he kept his nerve from the penalty spot to earn his side a surprise draw at Valencia.
The prolific David Villa's tenth league goal of the season, which takes him to the top of the goalscoring charts, had put Valencia in control three minutes into the second half.
Prior to Villa's opener Mallorca goalkeeper Dudu Aouate had frustrated the home side with a string of fine saves. When he was finally beaten it was from point-blank range, with Villa tapping in Ever Banega's delivery.
Earlier in the game Valencia had a goal disallowed when Villa nudged home David Silva's goal-bound effort from what was adjudged an offside position.
Valencia were made to rue such profligacy as Valero was composed from 12 yards with just five minutes to go, after Bruno Saltor had committed an unnecessary foul.
Mate Bilic struck the winner as Sporting Gijon continued their excellent recent form with a 1-0 win at home to Villarreal.
The Croatia striker was alert to the rebound and scrambled the ball home from close-range after Alberto Rivera had seen his penalty parried by Diego Lopez 15 minutes from time.
Villarreal defender Gonzalo Rodriguez was sent off for the foul on Miguel De Las Cuevas and there was no way back after that for the 10-man visitors.
Saturday's late game in Spain saw Sevilla and Malaga play out an entertaining 2-2 draw.
Malaga endured the worst possible start when Albert Luque was shown a straight red card but they still, somehow, managed to take a two-goal lead.
The visitors took a shock advantage into the interval thanks to goals from Fernando (23) and Patrick Mtiliga (45).
Sevilla needed a hero and it was Brazilian Luis Fabiano that stepped up to the plate, as he rescued his side a point with two clinically taken second half goals.
