Genoa proved far too strong for city rivals Sampdoria, while in Serie A's early game Udinese were comfortable victors over Livorno.
An action-packed game which featured three red cards at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris saw Genoa ease past Sampdoria 3-0.
Omar Milanetto put Genoa ahead from the penalty spot in the 10th minute with Marco Rossi adding a second in the 53rd and Raffaele Palladino scoring the third from the penalty spot 15 minutes from time.
Giuseppe Biava was sent off in the 45th minute with Rossi following him in the 66th minute and Fabrizio Cacciatore leaving Samp with nine men in the 88th minute.
Genoa went ahead in the 10th minute when Reto Ziegler was adjudged to have pushed Rodrigo Palacio to the ground as he cut in from the right. Milanetto stepped up to stroke home the spot-kick and give the home side an early advantage.
But the first half ended on a sour note for the home side as they lost Biava to a second yellow card as he intentionally handled the ball to prevent Antonio Cassano from breaking.
Rossi doubled their lead early in the second half, passing the ball through Luca Castellazzi's legs after being left alone by the luckless Ziegler.
And Ziegler's night got worse in the 75th minute when he gave away his second penalty of the night, this time fouling Sokratis Papastathopoulos. Palladino this time assumed the responsibility to beat Castellazzi from the spot.
Easy for Udinese
Udinese moved up to 12th in Serie A as they proved to be too strong for Livorno at Stadio Friuli.
The three points were all but wrapped up before half-time as Udinese made home advantage count as they raced into a two-goal lead.
Antonio Di Natale scored the first as his left-footed free-kick from the edge of the box beat Alfonso De Lucia in Livorno's goal just shy of the half hour mark.
It was a lead they doubled not long after as Aleksander Lukovic provided a pinpoint delivery for Antonio Floro Flores to head home.
