Steve Bruce has called on his Sunderland squad to snap out of their current slump, and quickly. The Black Cats, who began the season so positively, have seen their efforts start to unravel in recent weeks.
A 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Tuesday was their third setback in four outings and leaves them stuck in mid-table.
Bruce, though, is confident that he has the quality at his disposal to bring about a reversal in fortune.
"We have struggled in the last few weeks to get a settled team - a settled back four. We have had injuries and suspensions to some big players and that has affected us a little bit,"
"But in my experience of the Premier League, you can have a month like we're having. It's tough but we have to get through it and try to get through to the other side."
Bruce admits that leaking sloppy goals has cost his side dear of late, with the Sunderland chief of the opinion that Villa's opener in midweek could also have been prevented.
"It's key. That's the element we have to eradicate, which has unfortunately crept in," he said.
"We gave away a bad goal today, we conceded in the last 10 seconds against Portsmouth on Saturday and at this level that's the fine divide. However, we have to dust ourselves down, not feel sorry for ourselves and go again."
