Nigeria have axed coach Shaibu Amodu following the team's third-place finish at this year's Africa Cup of Nations.
It is the second time the 51-year-old has been sucked from his post ahead of a World Cup finals tournament.
He was also fired ahead of the 2002 World Cup finals after Nigeria finished third again at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Former coach Shaibu Amodu guided the Super Eagles to the finals and also recently saw them to third place at the African Cup of Nations.
The decision was taken after a late-night meeting of the Nigerian Football Federation in Abuja.
Names like Guus Hiddink and Louis van Gaal are being linked, but more likely targets are reported to be former Ghana coach Ratomir Dujkovic, Qatar chief Bruno Metsu and ex-England Under-21 chief Peter Taylor - who recently left Wycombe Wanderers.
The federation now hope to have a new man in charge by the end of the month.
Nigeria will be in Group B for the summer's World Cup in South Africa alongside Argentina, Greece and South Korea.
