Kirkland was slam by a projectile, probably a coin, thrown from the away section at the DW Stadium.
Anyone found guilty for an incident but the Football Association will have a talk with referee Mike Jones before taking decision.
From Wigan staff insists the matter is also being investigated by the police.
Chris Kirkland was struck on the top of the head in the 53rd minute of the tie, which was won 1-0 by Wigan after an added time goal from Hugo Rodallega.
