
Bayern Munich advanced into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on away goals, regardless of infliction a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Fiorentina at a stormy Artemio Franchi.
Bayern took a 2-1 advantage going into the re-entry tie in Florence, and though they were 3-1 behind on the night in the second period, Arjen Robben unleashed a wonder strike to make it 4-4 on aggregate, giving the Bayern the away goal privilege.
Fiorentina felt afflicted after the first leg defeat and set about avenging the score line, taking a deserved lead in the 29th minute after Juan Manuel Vargas pounced on Hans Jorg Butt's fumble to make it 1-0.
Alberto Gilardino's intelligent flip permited Stevan Jovetic to double the score after the restart, only for Bayern to get themselves back into the clash through Mark van Bommel's masterful finish from outside the area.
Viola thought they had recovered their lead when Jovetic combined with Gilardino back to make it 3-1 on 64 minutes, but just after the re-start Robben capped an inspired implementation by lashing a 30-yard scorcher into the top corner to send his side through in dramatic fashion.
The 3-2 defeat on the night was Bayern's first in 19 games, although qualifying for the Champions League quarter-final was more than sufficient compensation.
