Valencia ejected Werder Bremen in goal thriller

A hat-trick from David Villa helped Valencia to progress to the Europa League last eight on away goals after a thrilling 4-4 draw with Werder Bremen in the Weserstadion.

With the both teams tied at 1-1 from the first leg, Villa got the Spaniards off to a dream start by cancelling out "Bremens Musicians" away goal with one of their own after just two minutes of play.

And after just a quarter of an hour, Juan Mata had doubled Valencia's advantage to apparently put the visitors in control of the clash.

However, first-half substitute Hugo Almeida got the Bremen's back in the game before David Villa second goal of half-time restored Valencia's two-goal advantage.

A penalty from Werder captain Torsten Frings once again kept the home within sight of Valencia before Marko Marin made the score 3-3 on the night with 62 minutes on the clock.

The goal gave the German side restored optimism but, needing only one goal to go through in the clash, Villa shot the Germans down as he completed his hat-trick with an explicit finish only three minutes later.

There was still more time for a nervy finish as Claudio Pizarro evened up the score once more on the night with a header six minutes from time.

Valencia looked tired among an insane last storm from Werder Bremen, but the Primera Division giants duly hung on to make the quarter-finals of the competition.
